Chase ends in fatal shooting

The pursuit of a Lowndes County burglary suspect resulted in a fatal shooting Monday.

According to a news release issued by Sgt. Steve Jarrett of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, Alabama State Troopers assisted the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department in the search for a burglary suspect who was considered armed and dangerous on Monday, April 18.

According to the information provided by Jarrett, with assistance from a State Trooper helicopter and a tip from a civilian, units on the ground located the suspect near Cooper Road in the Hope Hull community.

When a Trooper made contact with the suspect and attempted to take him into custody, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the Trooper’s firearm was discharged, fatally injuring the suspect, who was identified as James Calvin Davis of Lowndes County.

According to Jarrett, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The ABI will report its findings to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.

It was reported in the news release that the search began in Lowndes County and ended in Montgomery County.

It involved multiple agencies including the Alabama Department of Corrections, Lowndes and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Departments and the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

Lowndes County Sheriff John Williams was unavailable for comment and no other information was available at this time.
