The White Hall Town Council will take the concerns of a local pastor for the safety of children with regard to speeders on a county road to the Lowndes County Commission.

The Rev. Franklin Nettles of Mt. Zion Christian Church appeared before the council Thursday night to request speed bumps and possible “slow children at play” signs in regard to speeders on County Road 17, also known as Will Cosby Road.

The speed limit on the road is 35 miles per hour. He said he witnessed traffic following well over the speed limit. He also said a lot of children play in the area. After discussing possible actions, the council agreed to take the matter up with the county commission.

After hearing a report on the recent Senior Olympics hosted in White Hall, Mayor Elizabeth Davis said she would like for the town to be a sponsor for the event in the future and would like to host the event again.

Council member Audrey Peterson said over 100 people attended the last one.

Council member Moses A. Bandy reported that forms for burning permits have been devised.

If citizens do not get them, he said, they would be in violation of the law “because we have enacted a no burn ordinance unless you comes through the town of White Hall.”

He said burning could become dangerous when winds are high.

The permits are $15 each.

Peterson also reported that resolutions were made for two citizens who passed away and presented frames to be used for future resolutions.

Davis said the town must make certain that a resolution is done for each citizen who passes away.

Bandy also reported that identification badges would be made for all employees of the town of White Hall with the “appropriate information” on them.

The council discussed holding a fund-raiser for matching funds for safe routes to school sidewalks. Davis said she would like the town to partner with the local school on such an effort.

In other matters, the council:

• Approved the minutes of its last meeting.

• Tabled a decision on lawn service bids.

• Agreed to table a decision on a request to use town hall each Sunday by the Truth Worship Center.

• Took no action on South Central Alabama Broadband Commission resolution. Davis said she was unable to talk with County Commission Chairman Charlie King Jr., but said council members will get a copies of the proposed resolution.

• Agreed to meet Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m. to view an ethics video.
