The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department made its second drug-related arrest in four days after a traffic stop Jan. 15.

Nicholas Calhoun, 20, of Mobile was arrested after a traffic stop ended in a nearly four-hour manhunt that led authorities across two counties, said Sgt. Tom Birtley.

Calhoun was stopped along Interstate 65 at mile marker 154 near Hope Hull for speeding when an odor of marijuana was smelled coming from Calhoun’s car.

After searching the vehicle, deputies discovered nearly two pounds of marijuana in Calhoun’s trunk.

Sheriff’s deputies had to request the assistance of the Alabama State Troopers, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Corrections dog tracking team after the suspect fled on foot across the Lowndes County line into Montgomery County, Birtley said.

Calhoun was arrested nearly four hours later on Federal Road in Montgomery, but not before he had broken into a Montgomery residence.

“When we were tracking him, he broke into a house,” said Birtley. “He stole and changed clothes to throw us off.”

Calhoun is being help in the Lowndes County Detention Facility where he is charged with felony possession of marijuana and escape.

Montgomery County has also charged the suspect with third-degree burglary and theft of property, 3^rd.
