The family of a paramedic killed two weeks ago while working along I-65 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, according to reports from the Associated Press.

Laura Elizabeth Pullam, 29, of Lowndesboro was killed while working at an accident scene after she was hit by a passing pickup truck.

State troopers identified the driver of the truck as Robert Allen Cumbie, 42.

Cumbie was named as the defendant in the lawsuit.

According to a press release from Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C., the lawsuit cites negligence and wantonness on the part of the defendant, who was allegedly driving too fast for the icy road and weather conditions.

The lawsuit was filed by Mary Smith, Pullam’s mother, on behalf of Pullam’s infant daughter.

“(Smith) wants to make sure the future is good for this child, that it’ll  be taken care of because of this lawsuit, because otherwise it would have no chance,” Jere Beasley, the family’s attorney, told the AP. “She really has no animosity toward the person who caused this.  She wants to take care of the child.”

The complaint was filed on Dec. 28 in Montgomery County, and a grand jury will likely decide whether to file charges.
