Montgomery — Just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Care Ambulance EMT Laura Elizabeth Pullam, 29, of Lowndesboro responded to two motor vehicle crashes on Interstate 65 southbound at the 161 mile marker in Montgomery County.

As she was rendering aid to victims of one crash, a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck left the interstate and struck Pullam.

Pullam was transported to Baptist South Hospital where she died as the result of her injuries.

The driver of the pickup, Robert Allen Cumbie, 42, of Montgomery was not injured.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the pickup truck was traveling in excess of the posted speed limit and passing traffic that had slowed due to icy road conditions and roadside emergency vehicles responding to area crashes.

Alabama state troopers are conducting a traffic homicide investigation, which will be forwarded to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The Department of Public Safety’s Traffic Homicide Unit investigates fatal crashes in which the driver of the prime contributing vehicle survives, for presentation to the appropriate district attorney.
