The Mosses Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) held its annual Christmas banquet Saturday to honor volunteers and those that work closely with the department.

The evening was host to a number of guest speakers, including Rep. David Colston, State EMS Director Dennis Blair, Regional Director for the Alabama Fire College Derrick Swanson and Mayor of Mosses Walter Hill.

Swanson voiced his appreciation for VFDs in all local communities in a speech about the difficulties all firefighters face.

“Working as a volunteer firefighter is, as we all know, is a thankless job,” said Swanson. “These men and women risk their lives everyday to protect our communities.”

Swanson continued noting how difficult is can be for departments to sign on new recruits in addition to their other duties.

At the speech’s conclusion, Swanson awarded certificates to members for their work with the Mosses VFD.

Robert Hrbowski was presented with the Buddy Smith Award for his honor and commitment to the department.

“Buddy Smith was one of Mosses first fire chiefs and was known to stand alone. Any time of the day or night he would respond,” said Mosses Fire Chief Eric Hall. “Our whole department was centered around him.”

Male Firefighter of 2010 went to Anthony Lewis for his consistent response throughout the year and has been consistent in training, volunteering and contributing to other areas of the community, Hall said.

Lieutenant LaShundra Hall was awarded and recognized as female firefighter of 2010.

Volunteer Nathan Perryman received the Most Improved Firefighter for 2010 Award.

Concluding the presentation, members of the community and others closely tied to the fire department offered their thanks and appreciation for the volunteers’ hard work.
