Bertha Steiner, 91, of Ft. Deposit returned home Tuesday after emergency workers found her unresponsive and rushed her to the hospital.

Ft. Deposit Police Officer in Training and volunteer firefighter, Marcus Smith, and Lt. Brandon Thomas responded to the medical call on Edgewood Drive around 1 p.m., Dec. 6, said Smith.

“When we arrived, we found her sitting in her wheelchair in the kitchen,” Smith said. “She was breathing, but her pulse was faint.”

Steiner had been asleep for about 45 minutes when Geraldine Fountain, Steiner’s daughter, called 911 when she found her mother unresponsive, added Smith.

Smith performed CPR and used a defibrillator as members of the Ft. Deposit Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) arrived at Steiner’s residence.

“She suddenly awoke about the time CARE Ambulance arrived,” said Smith. “She was taken to Baptist South.”

No cause has been determined as to why Steiner became unresponsive.
