Hayneville’s police chief and the Sheriff-elect will be a part of the committee interviewing applicants for the position of Mosses’ police chief.

In a recent town meeting, Mosses Mayor Walter Hill said Kelvin Mitchell of the Hayneville Police Department and John “Big John” Williams will be helping in the search for Mosses’ new police chief.

Mitchell said Hill informed him Nov. 1 the town of Mosses was receiving limited assistance from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department regarding patrols of the community.

Hill formally swore Mitchell in to over-see the Mosses Police Department until the appointment of a new police chief.

Mitchell said he has sworn in other officers with the Hayneville Police Department to assist with patrolling of the community and Central High School.

“We have received complaints from the community about loitering at local businesses,” said Mitchell.

Over the weekend, Mitchell and the Hayneville Police Department conducted a special assignment which resulted in the arrests of two people for loitering.

Police officers provided verbal warnings to offenders leading up to arrests that were made, said Mitchell.

Mitchell added he has received agreements from the White Hall and Ft. Deposit Police Departments to assist in enforcing the patrol of the Mosses community.

“We are not there 24 hours-a-day,” Mitchell said. “We have officers on duty five days a week until 6 a.m. that can assist in emergencies.”

Mitchell advised citizens to be cautious of the time and weather changes and to play it safe and think ahead.

Hill said the recommendation for the police chief will be brought before the council for review and approval Dec. 14.

Hill said he hopes the town of Mosses will have a new police chief by the beginning of 2011.
