As the holiday season approaches, one Lowndes County community is preparing for its upcoming holiday celebration.

The town of Hayneville and its community members are putting the final touches on the logistics for the Christmas Parade on Dec. 4.

The parade committee is in the process of choosing the grand marshal for the parade, which is generally someone who is active within the community of county.

“Whomever is chosen for the position of grand marshal will be presented a key to the city of Hayneville,” said Hayneville Mayor Helenor Bell.

The parade will begin immediately after the Dollars for Scholars march, which is designed to help raise money for graduating high school seniors and college students.

Money raised will help students pay for books, tuition and other college expenses, Bell said.

The march will begin around 9 a.m. and lead into the Christmas Parade around 11 a.m., which will proceed from the old Russell Elementary School to the Hayneville Square.

Following the parade the town will feature speakers, choirs and a tree lighting ceremony.

The parade has drawn nearly 400 attendees in past years and generally features about 70 participants showing off floats, cars, horses, bikes, marching bands and a number of other things, said Bell.

Residents are being encouraged to start preparing their floats to be one of the top three participants awarded plaques for best float.
