Lowndes County residents now have a new place to shop in White Hall. A new Piggly Wiggly supermarket has opened adjacent to the White Hall Casino.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the shopping center to present the supermarket to the town and county.
The new building was built using proceeds from the White Hall Casino and the Cornerstone Community Outreach organization.
The new supermarket is expected to bring about 40 new jobs to Lowndes County and attract business from White Hall, Mosses, Hayneville, Lowndesboro and passers-through on their way to and from Dallas and Montgomery Counties, according to Lowndes County Commission Chairman Charlie King, Jr.
“This is a great day for White Hall and Lowndes County as a whole,” said King. “We are going to do everything we can to make this work.”
Chad Dickie, General Manager of the White Hall resorts said there are nearly $100 million in projects planned for White Hall, including restaurants and hotels that will bring new jobs to Lowndes County.
“We hope to get electronic bingo back to be able to open more stores like this,” said Dickie. “The reopening of the casino will bring commuters from surrounding areas and help us to open new businesses.”
Adjacent to the supermarket are four other vacant areas for new businesses. Another business, the Wallace Sports Bar and Grill, located at one end of the complex, already has signs up and is expected to open soon.
District Commissioner Robert Harris was not present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony due to a prior engagement.
“I was scheduled to be out of town,” said Harris. “The notice I got wasn’t enough time for me to make changes.”
The grocery store will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and from 1-7 p.m. on Sundays.
WIC and EBT are not being accepted by the Piggly Wiggly supermarket until the week of Aug. 16.
