A local Lowndes County law enforcement official has been dismissed after walking off the job during his shift, according Mosses Mayor Walter Hill.
Former Police Chief Jimmy Harris of the Mosses Police Department walked off the job July 24 without notifying any of the town’s public officials of his resignation, Hill said.
“The Chief made no mention that he intended to quit,” said Hill. “He had every opportunity to notify me he was leaving.”
Hill said Harris was terminated July 26 for gross negligence and other wrongdoing, and was said to have accepted the letter of termination as was written.
Harris’s termination is waiting for acceptance by the Mosses town council.
Damian Steele will be acting as interim Police Chief until the town council is able to review applicants for the position of police chief.
“I will be out on patrol to make sure citizens are safe and hope to bring more officers to have 24-hour patrols,” said Steele.
Phone calls to Harris were not returned.
