Central Elementary held its most successful book fair ever, according to Media Specialist Annie Hayes.

The school’s library was host to students from schools throughout Lowndes County, including Ft. Deposit Elementary, Lowndes Middle, Hayneville Middle and Jackson-Steele, among other schools from April 19-30.

Parents, students, teachers and faculty were able to meet Clifford the Big Red Dog during his visit to the school to encourage children to read.

Volunteers organized and designated areas to house books, parents and teachers would read books to students and members of the Mosses town council made special visits to the two week event.

This was the first year Scholastic has sent a cash register to help keep track of the materials sold and print receipts for everyone purchasing books.

Hayes commented on the success and public response of this years book fair.

“This is the first year the students got actively involved,” said Hayes. “Someone purchased something from the book fair every day.”

All of the students were grouped according to class and led to the library by teachers’ assistants to spend a designated amount of time at the book fair.

Hayes has a commendable amount of experience as a media specialist for over a decade working at Russell prior to relocating to Central for the past eight years.

Hayes works to coordinate two fairs during the school year, one during the spring and another in the fall, advertising with signs, contacting people via the telephone and using the internet to draw visitors.
