Lowndesboro is completing the final touches on its sidewalk project before its Heritage Day celebration on May 1.

The event will last from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and a large number of people are expected to attend the occasion, according to Lowndesboro Mayor Rick Pate.

“Traffic will be slowed to a crawl through the town to allow for buses to transport guests to each of the many destinations on the pilgrimage,” said Pate.

As visitors migrate through town, they will have the opportunity to see community members portraying distinguished historical figures on the front porches of the notable homes.

At the President’s Home, Austin Mohun will be playing the role of Maxey Lewis, who was the son of Sen. Dixon H. Lewis and attended Lowndesboro Academy.

The teacher and students from the Lowndesboro Female Institute will be portrayed by Tammy Meadows, Amanda Mohun and April Mohun.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about Dixon Hall Lewis, portrayed by David Spooner, and his numerous political achievements at the Cottage.

In addition, Joe Ward will play the role of Hardy Vickers Wooten at Pecan Place, who was prominent in the medical field and helped found the Lowndesboro Female Institute.
