The youth of today are sometimes called the leaders of tomorrow. One Lowndes County eighth grade student is working toward that goal with his dedication to the class-room.

Demarcus Jackson, 13, of Lowndes Middle School was selected to attend the National Young Leaders State Conference (NYLSC) in Birmingham on Mar. 4.

The NYLSC offers lessons in leadership principles with their work in schools and communities throughout the country.

Jackson was nominated by the school’s librarian, Adrienne Butler, for his “respectable” character traits, positive attitude and his consistently good grades.

“Demarcus works well with fellow classmates, is very attentive in class and self-motivated,” said Butler.
Concentrating on math and science Jackson participates in extracurricular activities, such as basketball, football, reading and learning computer skills.

When asked, Jackson said he became overcome with excitement after receiving his letter of nomination this past summer.

“My grandmother is my inspiration and this experience will give me the opportunity to become a better leader and meet other self-motivated people. I look forward to participating in the conference,” Jackson added.

Students nominated from across the country are given the unique experience of meeting and learning from the multiple U.S. officials in attendance.

“This will give Demarcus the opportunity to showcase his education, represent the qualities of leaders and encourage others to achieve similar goals,” said Principal Archie Curtis.

Jackson said he enjoys school and he sees this nomination as an avenue to achieve his life-long goal of becoming an architect.
