Calhoun and Central fell to regional opponents on the road Friday night to set up a meeting between two winless arch rivals this coming Friday in Letohatchee.
Calhoun fell to regional opponent Elba on the road 70-12. The loss dropped the Tigers to 0-6 in Class 2A Region 3 play and 0-8 overall.
Scores for Calhoun came on a 60-yard touchdown run by Arthur Phifer and a 35-yard touchdown pass from Demarco Jiles to Quintarrious Arrington.
Phifer had 115 yards rushing, one touchdown and 100 yards passing. Jiles had 75 yards passing and one touchdown.
Lewis Smith had 80 yards receiving and Gnald Sharpe had 50 yards receiving.
Calhoun head football coach Dewayne Williams said the team started the game “nervous and afraid” and made numerous mistakes. “But,” he said, “as the game went on, we got our nerves back.”
The Tigers will host region opponent and arch rival Central for homecoming this coming Friday night. And Williams said he knows his team will be up for the game.
“This rivalry is like the Iron Bowl for Lowndes County sports,” Williams said. “It’s that one game that the players look forward to on the schedule. This one game that we as coaches don’t have to hype the guys up to play. For seniors it will be their
last time playing in it, so it means a lot to them to win.”
Central fell to regional opponent New Bockton 55-8 on the road. The loss dropped the Lions to 0-6 in Class 2A Region 3 play and 0-8 overall.
Shaq Robinson scored for Central on a 70-yard pass from Keegan Blackman.
“We were out matched from top to bottom,” Central head football coach Martez Graham said of the New Brockton game.
Howerver, he said, “I’m looking for a lot of intensity from the team,” regarding the upcoming rivalry game with Calhoun. “Someone has to win, and I want it to be us.”
Graham said Central is looking for a good week of practice. And he said he reminded his Lions that the preseason game loss to Calhoun was a “fluke.” He said the Lions had only practiced football for six days prior to that contest.
Central travels to to face arch rival and regional opponent Calhoun for Calhoun’s homecoming this coming Friday night.
